Original 1962 Fender Stratocaster in Fiesta Red. This is a one owner guitar from new with full provenance provided. We have carried out a full inspection of this guitar the finding of which are detailed below.

Although there are things that have been changed with this guitar the one owner provenance adds a great deal of value and we are positive that you will never again have the opportunity to buy a 1 owner 62 strat ever again. All of the changes made to this guitar have been through pride and use.... when the logo became damaged it was replaced, when it started to look battered it was repainted, this has been one mans pride and joy for over 50 years and has been therefore treated with the respect he believed it deserved.....of course to the collector who wants a case queen this is not the guitar for them...but for a player/collector who wants to feel the mojo and love lavished on a guitar over 50 years then you will simply not find a better sounding and playing example.

To add some interest to this instrument we have been advised by the family that this guitar is THE guitar that Mark Knopfler stared at every saturday through a Newcastle music shop window until the current owner bought it!

The guitar has been refinished in what is said to be the original colour. The paint is crazed which I would expect with an older repaint with the correct paint. Due to age certain areas of paint are starting to flake off. The logo has been partially replaced, the Stratocaster, Original Contour Body and the remainder of the patent numbers are visible and are original. The “Fender” part of the logo has been replaced with what appears to be a Fender telecaster logo as it is too large to be a Stratocaster one. This is not unknown of as the logos were over the top of the laquer and could easily become damaged.

The neck appears to have been oversprayed  on the rear at some point.

Tuners have been replaced with modern reissue versions. The bushings and string tree on the headstock are however original to 1962.

The top nut has been replaced with a Brass version which is not original.

The guitar appears to have been refretted at some point in its life.

The scratchplate of the guitar is non original as it should have a mint green model. Also the top screw for the plate is in a different position than it should be for a 1962 which indicates replacement at some point. Pickup covers and knobs appear to be replacements also.

Bridge and saddles are original as is the tremolo bar.

Jack socket cup appears original.

Before plugging in the switch appears very stiff through lack of use.

Plugging in:- The switch although stiff works and the Neck and Middle pickups work and sound fantastic. The Bridge pickup however appears to have no output. Further investigation upon stripdown required. Volume and tone pots work 100%

Remove strings and backplate. Bridge block is original as are springs.

Remove Neck. Pencil date at end of neck is 02 62. Pencil marks were used until March 1962 when rubber stamps became used so this is consistent with this instrument being a very early 1962 Slabboard Strat. Fingerboard appears to be Brazilian Rosewood. Dots are clay as per this year.

Remove scratchplate. Evidence of refinish, however no other colours are visible even under chips etc or have bled into the neck which leads us to agree that this is an original colour refinish. Worm route and cavities are as per 1962. Nail holes have been  filled during refinish however upon inspection a depression is noted near the neck which appears to be a filled nail hole which is consistent with 1962. Rear of pickguard does not have metal shielding plate and is confirmed as replacement. Also pickup height adjustment screws should have surgical tubing instead of springs in 1962 so these have been replaced.

Electronics. Pickups are original as is wiring and tone capacitor. The 2 tone pots have been replaced. Date coding on these relates to 1976. Volume pot appears later also however date code is not visible due to solder covering the code. Switch has been changed for a 5 way version.

Original Bridge pickup is open circuit and has replaced with  a AVRI unit. The original pickup is provided.
